Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus)

Watercolor and colored pencil

A distinctive bird-of-prey, the peregrine falcon is one of the most powerful and fastest creatures on the planet, reaching speeds of over 300 kph when diving for prey. Dedicated conservation efforts brought this fascinating animal back from the brink of extinction after populations in the mid-1900s were nearly wiped out from the effects of the herbicide DDT.

Project: Commissioned for a collection of exemplar species pages during the launch phase of the Encyclopedia of Life (eol.org) whose goal is to provide information about every species on the planet.
