Blue Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius “azureus”)

Acrylic on masonite

The endangered Blue Poison Dart Frog, also known by its indigenous Tirio name of Okipipi, is from the isolated rainforest of southern Suriname and northern Brazil. It is mainly found near streams during the day, but will occasionally be seen high in the treetops. Its poison skin, used by natives to make darts, is a result of a diet of poisonous ants. You are what you eat! Because of their highly permeable skin, frogs are extremely vulnerable to pollution and other changes to their environment.
